LOS ANGELES: Pop superstar Celine Dion has once again put the spotlight on her personal health crisis, using her public holiday message to encourage reflection while continuing her role as an advocate for the extremely rare condition, Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS).
Dion publicly disclosed her SPS diagnosis in 2022. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke defines SPS as a “rare, progressive syndrome that affects the nervous system, specifically the brain and spinal cord.” The condition is characterized by muscle stiffness in the torso and limbs, as well as painful, debilitating spasms that can be triggered by external stimuli like loud noise or emotional distress.

The progressive nature of SPS has had an immense impact on the music legend’s career. In 2023, the decision was made to cancel her “Courage World Tour,” marking a devastating halt to her touring career after decades on stage.
Despite the challenges, which were chronicled in her 2024 documentary “I Am: Céline Dion,” Dion’s candor has led to what some analysts call the “Céline effect,” significantly boosting global awareness for the often-misdiagnosed disorder.
Her Thanksgiving video was a brief but potent reminder of her focus: “May your Thanksgiving be filled with joy, with peace, and with gratitude for everything even the little things,” she said, expressing deep thanks for her family. Her ongoing updates serve as both a personal testament to resilience and a critical educational tool for the medical community and the public.
